Enterprise Routers

Enterprise routers can be used to give small offices the ability to securely transfer data between networks. In the past, the majority of one-floor businesses on a local area network (LAN) used an internet service provider’s network to receive and forward data packets. As we have come to learn time and time again, the Internet is not secure. An enterprise router allows you to connect a private LAN to a much larger, public WAN (wide area network) without the fear that transfers will be violated from the outside.

Enterprise routers can generally be found in two different forms. Most small offices will benefit from a fixed-configuration model. While it is not as versatile as other enterprise routers, it has a lower level of power consumption and it is more affordable. Many larger businesses use modular enterprise routers. A modular router allows you to add new interface and services cards, expanding the router’s capabilities.

While each business has its own specific needs, you should be able to find an enterprise router that suits your office. You can find routers with multiple WAN and LAN interfaces, and there are products on the market with varying degrees of security and high-speed features. Ultimately, enterprise routers should process and forward IP (internet protocol) packets rapidly and securely, and they should translate between channelized and packetized voice traffic.
