The 4th Biennial Equity Conference 2009 innovate-educate-celebrate will be held on 10 and 11 September at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. The conference is hosted by NSW Priority Schools Programs.
2009 represents the start of the new quadrennium and is an opportune time to support capacity building in low socio-economic status school communities to deliver high quality teaching and learning programs that will result in increased student literacy, numeracy and engagement levels.
The conference will:
- include a rigorous focus on equity and education considering low socio-economic status communities and the intersecting factors including geographic isolation, Aboriginality, gender, disability and cultural and linguistic diversity
- support the State Plan targets and the six Office of Schools Plan priorities of literacy, numeracy, student engagement and retention, Aboriginal education and training, teacher quality and connected learning.
We welcome you to be a part of this exciting event.
Conference history
Since 2003, Priority Schools Programs have established a record of delivering highly successful biennial state wide equity conferences that have promoted effective classroom and school practices that support student literacy, numeracy and engagement in low socio-economic status communities. A high level of student participation has been a successful feature of each conference.
Invitation
The 4th Biennial Equity Conference 2009 innovate-educate-celebrate will provide an opportunity for a diverse group of educators, school community members and other agencies to come together.
Schools are encouraged to send a team of teachers, parents/community members and students to the conference. Parents and students will be able to attend at a reduced rate.
The conference also welcomes NSW Department of Education and Training regional and state office personnel, academics and educators.
Conference goal
The primary goal of the conference is to support schools to consider how they might do things differently and better rather than more of the same to achieve improvement in student literacy and numeracy outcomes and levels of student engagement in low socio-economic status school communities across New South Wales.
The goals of the conference are to:
- support capacity building in low socio-economic status school communities
- challenge thinking and refine practice
- focus on equity
- engage a diverse audience of teachers, school leaders, students, parents and community members
- be eco-friendly.
About Priority Schools Programs
Priority Schools Programs support government schools serving the highest densities of low socio-economic status families in New South Wales.
Priority Schools Programs comprise the Priority Schools Funding Program and the Priority Action Schools Program.
The purpose of Priority Schools Programs resources is to reduce the achievement gap in outcomes for students in low socio-economic status communities.
Priority Schools Programs resources include direct grants to schools, staffing supplementation to improve the ratio of staff to students and consultancy support through targeted regional consultants and partnership officers.
The resources are provided to improve the literacy and numeracy achievements and engagement of students from low socio-economic status backgrounds. These are the most critical requirements for student achievement across the full range of education and training outcomes.
